France national rugby union team’s record in major competition

VI Nations tournament

France has won nine Grand Slams in the V and VI Nations tournaments combined (Six Nations since 2000): 1968, 1977, 1981, 1987, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2010. France is third in number of wins behind England (12 Grand Slams) and Wales (10) but has the highest Grand Slams to games-played ratio because France has only played 339 matches (55% of victories) compared to 438 for the two principal rivals.

World Cup

France has played in three World Cup finals losing against New Zealand in the first World Cup tournament in 1987, losing against Australia in 1999 and finally losing against New Zealand in 2011. France remains therefore the only major nation in rugby to reach the highest stage of the competition without winning. France has been knocked out in the semi-finals three times (1995, 2003 and 2007) and once in the quarterfinals (1991), the earliest stage they have ever left the competition.
